The founder of NII SHINAN
A Life Devoted to Teaching.
Maestro Luis Marquez Pinedo has spent much of his life passing on Shipibo language, cultural knowledge and artistic traditions to new generations.
About us
A Family Tradition,
Passed Through Generations.
NII SHINAN is created in collaboration with the family of Onanya Maestro Luis Marquez Pinedo, son of Mama Rosa, from the Shipibo-Conibo community of the Peruvian Amazon.
Within Shipibo tradition, women weave designs connected to Ikaros: songs that form part of their ancestral ceremonial practices and that can also be sung.
These songs carry knowledge passed from one generation to the next and address themes including spirituality, wisdom, family, the natural environment and life in the Ucayali region.
The Ucayali River, flowing through the heart of the Peruvian Amazon, is also reflected in many of these stories, songs and designs.
Luis and his family have dedicated much of their lives to teaching and preserving Shipibo language and culture. Luis formerly worked as a teacher at the University of Lima.
Together with his family, he has contributed to education through the establishment of a school, the teaching of the Shipibo language, ceremonial practice, and the continuation of textile traditions in which these designs are woven by hand.
As younger generations increasingly move towards cities, modernization and globalization have changed the ways in which Shipibo language, clothing and cultural practices are passed on. Many younger people no longer speak the language fluently or wear traditional clothing in daily life.
For the family of Luis, this has created a commitment to continue teaching both Shipibo people and audiences beyond their community about their language, visual traditions and cultural knowledge.
Living Design, Reframed
The designs of NII SHINAN are presented through contemporary interior pieces, creating a bridge between Shipibo-Conibo visual heritage and modern spaces.
The design remains the focal point. The context changes.
