NII SHINAN is created in collaboration with the family of Onanya Maestro Luis Marquez Pinedo, son of Mama Rosa, from the Shipibo-Conibo community of the Peruvian Amazon.
Within Shipibo tradition, women weave designs connected to Ikaros: songs that form part of their ancestral ceremonial practices and that can also be sung.
Design gallery
Xao Kené draws on patterns associated with connection and acceptance. Within Shipibo tradition, it reflects the idea that individuals and their differences can coexist without conflict, forming a unified whole in which each part keeps its own distinctness.
Mayá Kené represents family as a structured system, in which each member forms part of a larger whole. The pattern reflects continuity across generations, emphasising a sense of belonging and the shared roots held in common.
This variation of Mayá Kené refers to the union of two families through marriage. It concerns not only the couple, but the merging of their separate histories, values, and responsibilities into a single shared whole.
Metax Kené is inspired by trees as sources of protection, shelter, and life. Within Shipibo culture, trees are associated with stability and with what is described as the quiet intelligence of nature.
Sanken Kené reflects the idea that all elements. Water, earth, air, and life. Function together as a single interconnected system. Within this understanding, nothing exists in isolation, and each element depends upon the others.
This design refers to the transmission of knowledge through medicinal plants. It reflects a form of learning passed down through observation, experience, and memory. Rather than through written language, and preserved from one person to the next.
Traditionally, this variation of Mayá Kené was associated with adornment. Within the community, it functioned as a way of signalling openness, readiness, and presence, a pattern worn to be seen rather than kept from view.
This variation of Xao Kené expresses a balance between opposites: light and dark, masculine and feminine, sun and moon. It is one of several Xao Kené patterns concerned with the relationship between contrasting elements, held here in equilibrium.
Petó Kené represents the relationship between the forest and the sky as two connected domains. It reflects an understanding of the natural world as layered and interdependent, in which what happens below is linked to what exists above.
Moatian Kené is associated with water and with movement. It represents flow, cleansing, and renewal, the continuous circulation of water as an active, life-sustaining force within the natural world.
